This ax head belonged to my wife’s grandfather and was given to me upon his death. This ax has a flat side and the other is normal. Any information about this ax is welcomed! Can’t wait to hear from you.

This is a broad axe for hewing or shaping wood. The edge features a single bevel (like a chisel) on one side, I If I’m correct, the axe has a blade face that is flat on the left hand side (when holding and viewing the axe with the edge facing the ground) and is meant for use on the right-hand side of the piece being worked on. Given the lugs (or ears – those rounded parts at the top and bottom) this axe was probably made sometime in the 1930-50s. Eventually HB stopped making these with the lugs in the 1960s. You can find a few versions of this pattern here: http://hultsbruk1697.se/vintage-axes-hatchets/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/HB-Catalogue-page-131012017.pdf and here: http://hultsbruk1697.se/vintage-axes-hatchets/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/HB-Catalogue-page-131012017.pdf (called slojd – or woodworking).
