Hults Bruk 1.5 lb Rhineland Pattern – Pre 1988

This is an axe head I just received from Sweden. I just hung it on an American hickory handle and sharpened it carefully paying attention to keeping the temper intact. I had blue paint on it with an un-readable sticker on the paint. Any info on this model is appreciated.

I want to call this one Montreal pattern, but the shape is a bit more like a South American pattern. The cold stamped HB logo puts the production sometime between 1950s and 1988. Nice handle!

The person I bought this from says it is Rhineland pattern – does this make sense? This head is so well balanced on this handle and holds an edge so well, it has replaced my GB Small Forest axe as my primary carry for camping.

Yes this could be a Rhineland pattern. The other Rhineland on the site: http://hultsbruk1697.se/vintage-axes-hatchets/hults-bruk-rhineland-pattern-axe/

Great little hatchet. The perspective is off but generally true Rhineland patterns have a symmetrically flared toe and heel. A Montreal pattern has an extended heel but a flat top. With every shape in between being made as well.
