Hults Bruk – 1970s NOS

I purchased a few axes recently from a person who said they were from the 1970s. This ax was in the group, and the head has what appears to be the older style ABY stamp with a handle from that 1970s period. It also has all the stickers and such, so is unused. Unsure why the older style early 1900s head was being sold in the 1970s as NOS.

Fantastic piece though. Very nice quality. I’m curious if this is an unusual thing. Seems unlikely a company would have so much stock in house that it takes 70 years to finally get around to assembling into complete product. Is it a refurbished item?

First off, congratulations – what a find and a bit of a mystery! Going by the markings (HB poll stamp, ABY and the X) and style (triangle-shaped lugs/ears!) this axe was made around 1930s. Prior to 1950 Hults Bruk axes were made of two separate steels, so you might be able to see a slight weld mark above the bit if this was made before 1950s.

But the stickers, paint, and handle are 1970s style?

I’m going to say this is a refurbished axe. The fawns foot on the handle is unusual (very pronounced) for this era HB. And the grey paint near the bit is not typical.
