Hults Bruk – Agdor Montreal Pattern – 1970s

I was recently looking my old axe that was given to me about 10 years ago at an estate sale for one of my friends uncles. I had taken it home and “refurbished” it to use for camping, hence the orange paint on the head. Now after looking at the labelling and markings, and cross referencing a few posts on the site, I have come to a conclusion, first that it is definitely a Hults Bruk, and second that it is pre-1988 and post-1970…. I think. I’ll include some pictures, and if its hard to distinguish, it originally had a blue head, and a shorter(red) paint line on the now orange end of the handle. I had just elongated the paint line when the aforementioned “refurbishing” took place. The head markings are 1.1/ 2-1/2 and the other side is the makers mark “HB” and “Made In Sweden”. The sticker specifically states “AGDOR-FIX shafting”. So now after all that, I’m just wondering everyone’s thoughts, and maybe a more definitive answer on what head design the axe most represents and from what era/year if possible. Thanks in advance for the replies!!

Found among old tools that need to be refurbished. No handle, but the head was in excellent shape aside from rust.

Hults Bruk Agdor Montreal & Yankee – circa 1970

I notice many axes with cold stamp are dated pre-1988. I found these two axes on Vancouver Island, BC. Am wondering if the labels and factory handles/paint will allow you to date these two axes with more precision? Thanks, Colby

Hults Bruk 0.6kg Montreal Hatchet – Pre 1988

Hi – this axe head was bought from someone in Sweden and I cleaned it up a bit, then mounted it on a sapwood piece of hickory. I am going to donate this to a local fire department but it would be interesting to know the pattern and approximate production date. Thanks

Hults Bruk Montreal 3 1/2 lb Axe – Pre 1988

Enjoyed bucking tough red oak recently felled by hurricane winds. The HB Montreal pattern makes the chips fly!

Hults Bruk 1.75 lb Montreal Pattern – Pre 1988

I received a very rusty old axe head as a gift, in order to attempt refurbishing it. It had been used as a door stopper. After a lot of work with wet sandpaper some markings became visible: One side is stamped “08/1¾” and the other with “Hults bruk”. It had a lot of mushrooming which I removed with a file. I did not sand out all the battle scars as I think they give the axe character and patina.
After a bit of shopping I found a rather expensive but beautiful dark hickory handle from Hultafors that fit pretty well. The edge was decent but had some chips in it. Got most of the chips out with a Tormek, the edge became shaving sharp.
Took it for a trip in the forest yesterday and it performed very well. It easily slices through one inch thick branches with one stroke. This fairly light axe head balances beautifully on the 65 cm handle, making it easy to go where I want it to go. I am glad i did not put it on a short handle like I originally intended. The edge showed no signs of dulling even after two hours of chopping in fairly dry resinous pinewood. This has been my first successful axe restoration.

Are you able to identify the model and possibly age of this axe? Also I wonder what the number code means.

Hults Bruk – Montreal Felling Axe – Pre 1988

Hello. I bought these two at a flea market.  One has blue paint other just rust. I am hoping they are quality hults bruk.  Large one is 3.5 pounds and other is 2 1/4. Both have made in Sweden stamp.  Thank you.

Hults Bruk Montreal Pattern – Post 1988

Found in BC Canada, at trappers cabin, at Woss Lake – approximately half way up the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. Attached photo shows the head with only iron oxide removed carefully with light abrasives  Id marks appear to be LI on left and 21 on right. When was this head forged, and what can you tell?
